  1. King of England from Jan 1066. He succeeded
  2. his father Earl Godwin 1053 as earl of
  3. Wessex. In 1063 William of Normandy (William
  4. I) tricked him into swearing to support his
  5. claim to the English throne, and when the
  6. Witan (a council of high-ranking religious
  7. and secular men) elected Harold to succeed
  8. Edward the Confessor, William prepared to
  9. invade. Meanwhile, Harold's treacherous
  10. brother Tostig (died 1066) joined the king of
  11. Norway, Harald III Hardrada (1015-66), in
  12. invading Northumbria. Harold routed and
  13. killed them at Stamford Bridge 25 Sept. Three
  14. days later William landed at Pevensey,
  15. Sussex; Harold was killed at the Battle of
  16. Hastings 14 Oct 1066.
